This mount, made by the same manufacturers of the original
Nikon mount sold by RED (that would be us, Long Valley!) allows
you to activate the iris on all G and specifically DX series
Nikon lenses. Simply turn the brass iris knob clockwise to open
up your iris, and counterclockwise to close it down.
DX lenses have been specifically made by Nikon for use with
their digital cameras, which have a sensor almost identical in
size as the RED One. This means that the lenses have been
optically optimized for these very similar formats, so DX
lenses are smaller, lighter, and have extended range compared
to full frame still lenses. For example, the 17-55 Nikon shown
is smaller, lighter, and less expensive than the 17-35 non-DX
Nikon zoom. And it holds focus very well throughout its zoom
range. Other lenses such as the Tokina 11-16 are only available
in DX series and must therefore have the iris activated by this
type of mount if used on the RED One camera, since they do not
have iris rings built into the lens itself.
Please note: you will still be able to use your Nikon manual iris lenses as well as G and DX series Nikon lenses with this new mount.
